My first experience in ocean boating came when I moved to San Diego when I was 21 and bought a Catalina 27 to live on several months later. I learned to sail on my sea trial, there was nothing more natural to me than sailing. The broker was a very nice woman who showed me how to rig it and got us underway. From there I started trimming sail and driving like I had always done it. She said to me, “You’ll be just fine…” and she was right. My neighbor whom I was moving away from, Tom Daly, gave me a copy of Royce’s Sailing Illustrated; from there I learned so much. I’ve always been appreciative of its illustrations as I have a photographic type memory; I always recommend that book to any new sailor. Great history there as well, all delivered with humor.
